Flint's 25th Crim Race
The Crim Road Race is a success because of the world class runners
that participate in it and the many thousands of week end warriors that
run in their wake. However, its also depends upon a large number of
volunteers who work in the background to ensure that the whole event
goes off without incident. Richfield, together with a business named
Curbco, volunteer our services to ensure that the downtown area is clean,
before and after the race, so that visitors leave with the best possible
impression.
Over time we have developed a plan that allows us to clean up the whole
downtown area, as well as the course itself, in less than an hour. The
people from Curbco use blowers and bobcats to pile up the waste, while
Richfield personnel use a wheel loader to transfer the piles into one
of our large waste collection trucks. The whole race area in downtown
Flint and the course itself, is cleared of waste and swept clean by
5 pm, which allows the post race festivities to take place in a clean
and congenial atmosphere.
In addition to the street clean up Richfield Equities collects thousands
of paper water cups and plastic water bottles from out on the course
and deliver them to a local recycling center. We also provide two large
roll off cans to collect food packaging materials, such as several hundred
pizza boxes, can be stored in a central location, then delivered to
the same recycling center once the festivities are over. Prior to our
involvement all these recyclable materials were dumped into a waste
collection truck with the waste from the streets and sent to the landfill.
At the present time over 75% of the food and beverage containers used
during the race day festivities are recycled, instead of being dumped
in the landfill. This waste diversion program is good for the environment
and it is in keeping with the spirit of Bobby Crim and the race that
is named after him.
